Kokopelli: The Flute Player

The Kokopelli is regarded as the symbol of worldly fertility. Upon the their entrance to the fourth world, Hopi legend states that the tribe was met by an eagle who shot two "mahus" with an arrow. Mahus are insects that carry the power of heat. After being shot by the eagle the two mahus started playing songs with their flutes and the melodies helped to heal their bodies. The manus humps became filled with seeds of all the plants of the world and each mahu scattered the seeds onto the infertile land. Others believe that Kokopelli was given magical powers and as he plays his flute over the crops immediately fruit and vegetables will grow. The Kokopelli is found in petroglyphs, pictographs, and pottery of the Hopi tribe.
